Originally from Ireland and based in Berlin, Paul McNamara has sung in several German theaters where his many notable successes have included his critically-acclaimed début at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in Braunfels’ SZENEN AUS DEM LEBEN DER HEILIGEN JOHANNA and the title-roles in Wagner’s TANNHÄUSER and PARSIFAL at the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg, for both of which he was nominated as “Singer of the Year” in the German magazine “Opernwelt”. Further afield, the tenor won widespread approbation for his Carnegie Hall debut with the American Symphony orchestra under its chief conductor Leon Botstein, where his rendering of the demanding role of Giovanni di Salviati in Max von Schillings’ rarely performed opera MONA LISA was hailed by the audience and critics alike.
Guest appearances have taken the much sought-after tenor to the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, Northern Ireland Opera, Cape Town Opera, the Janáček Festival in Brno, the Opera Lesna in Sopot (Poland), the Theatro Municipal, Rio de Janeiro and with the Salzburg Festival at the Beijing Music Festival. In December 2010 he performed at the National Opera in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where he sang TANNHÄUSER in the first ever production of a Wagner opera in Central Asia.
Future engagements include Strauss’ SALOME in Linz and productions of Wagner’s TANNHÄUSER and Britten’s PETER GRIMES in Germany as well as concert appearances in Dublin’s National Concert Hall in Beethoven’s Christus Am Ölberge and Bruckner’s Te Deum, and New York’s Carnegie Hall in Elgar’s The Apostles. Engagements from the 2015/16 Season include debuts at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Leipzig Opera in Richard Wagner’s DAS LIEBESVERBOT and Elemer in Richard Strauss’ ARABELLA. Elsewhere, McNamara will reprise his much lauded interpretation of Loge at the opera in Halle and appear as Tannhäuser at the Wartburg zu Eisenach as well as in new productions of this opera in Aachen and Innsbruck.
In addition to Wagner’s Erik, Loge, Tannhäuser, Tristan and Parsifal, Paul McNamara’s extensive repertoire encompasses roles such as Mozart’s IDOMENEO, Max in Weber’s DER FREISCHÜTZ, Vasco da Gama in Meyerbeer’s L’AFRICAINE, Lenski in Tchaikovsky’s EUGENE ONEGIN, Canio in Leoncavallo’s PAGLIACCI, the Prince in Dvořák’s RUSALKA, Herodes in Strauss’ SALOME, Bacchus in Strauss’ ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, Tichon in Janáček’s KÁTA KABANOVÁ, Guido Bardi in Zemlinsky’s EINE FLORENTINISCHE TRAGÖDIE, the Tambourmajor in Berg’s WOZZECK, the title-role in Britten’s PETER GRIMES, Baron de Laubardemont in Krzysztof Penderecki’s THE DEVILS OF LOUDUN and Harold Mitchell in André Previn’s A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE.
A keen recitalist, Paul McNamara is also a highly regarded concert singer. He has received invitations from, amongst others, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, the SWR Radio Orchestra, the Stavanger Symfoniorkest, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and the Irish Chamber Orchestra.
A recipient of many awards and scholarships, Paul McNamara is a former student of the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin and an honours graduate of the University College Cork, the Cork School of Music and the Royal College of Music London.
