Perry L. Brown

A versatile artist, Perry L. Brown’s repertoire spans not only opera and oratorio, but also Broadway, national and regional theater. He made his operatic debut with Michigan Opera Theater as the Commendatore DON GIOVANNI. He made his Seattle Opera debut in the role of Don Fernando FIDELIOreturning the following season as Sparafucile in RIGOLETTO. Skilled as a crossover artist, his repertoire includes such diverse roles as Crown PORGY AND BESS, the Bonze MADAMA BUTTERFLY, Balthazar AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS, Bartolo LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, CollineLA BOHÈME, Tommaso UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, and the King, Ramfis and Amonasro AIDA. In the 2005/2006 season Mr. Brown made his debut as the Bonze MADAMA BUTTERFLY with New Orleans Opera; he reprised the role the following season with Austin Lyric Opera and Palm Beach Opera.

No stranger to Broadway, he has sung the roles of Joe SHOWBOAT, Henry IT’S SO NICE TO BE CIVILIZED, and Mballah TIMBUKTU. He has been seen on national tours of the shows, as well as a PBS Great Performances production of SHOWBOAT where he received critical acclaim for his interpretation of the role of Joe.

An active crossover artist, he has accumulated such diverse credits as King Henry VIII in PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, Jim BIG RIVER, the title role of OTHELLO, Tiny Joe DREAMGIRLS, Audrey LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, Caiaphus JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, and Big Jule GUYS AND DOLLS.

Mr. Brown won 1st Place Award in the Western Regional Metropolitan Opera Competition and was 1st Place Winner of the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition. Recent engagements include the role of Crown PORGY AND BESS with Michigan Opera Theatre and the role of the Undertaker in LA Opera’s recent production of the same work.
