Phillip Gay

downloadAmerican bass-baritone Phillip Gay is a recent alumnus of the Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artist Program. His voice is hailed by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review as “impressive” and “sonorous”, and the Tampa Bay Times praises his “commanding bass-baritone delivery”.  In the 2015-16 season, Mr. Gay made his debut with St. Petersburg Opera as Zuniga CARMEN, as well as with Syracuse Opera as Colline LA BOHÈME and Hortensius DAUGHTER OF REGIMENT with Intermountain Opera.   In the 2014-15 season, he sang the role of Lodovico OTELLO, Garibaldo RODELINDA, Zuniga CARMEN, and Hortensius DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT. In April 2015, Mr. Gay was the bass soloist in Mozart’s Requiem at Erie Philharmonic. In the 2013-14 season, he was seen as King AIDA, Second Armed Man THE MAGIC FLUTE, Principal PAUL’S CASE, Colline LA BOHÈME, and Judge ORPHÉE. Upcoming engagements include Cool Papa Bell in Daniel Sonenberg’s THE SUMMER KING for Pittsburgh Opera.

Mr. Gay appeared at the Glimmerglass Festival in 2012 as King AIDA. He also covered the role of Stephen Kumalo LOST IN THE STARS and performed in various concerts as part of Glimmerglass’s Young Artists Program. Other roles include Seneca L’INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA with New York Lyric Opera Theatre. While studying for his master’s degree at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he sang the roles of Sparafucile RIGOLETTO, Don Quixote MAN OF LA MANCHA, Balthazar AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS, Silvano LA CALISTO, Speaker THE MAGIC FLUTE, and Canaval in the world premiere of PARADISES LOST with the University of Illinois Opera Theatre.

A native of Beaumont, Texas, Mr. Gay received his B.M. in Vocal Performance from Lamar University, and his M.M. in Vocal Performance from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Mr. Gay was a District Winner in the 2014 and 2011 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
