American bass-baritone Phillip Gay is a recent alumnus of the Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artist Program. His voice is hailed by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review as “impressive” and “sonorous”, and the Tampa Bay Times praises his “commanding bass-baritone delivery”.  Recent operatic engagements include Zuniga CARMEN with St. Petersburg Opera,  Colline LA BOHÈME with Syracuse Opera,  Hortensius DAUGHTER OF REGIMENT with Intermountain Opera and, Lodovico OTELLO, Garibaldo RODELINDA, Zuniga CARMEN and Hortensius DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT, Il ReAIDA and Cool Papa Bell in Daniel Sonenberg’s THE SUMMER KING for Pittsburgh Opera and the role of Isaac in Glen Roven’s BOUNCE with Kentucky Opera.

Mr. Gay has appeared at the Glimmerglass Festival  as King AIDA,  also covering the role of Stephen Kumalo LOST IN THE STARS and performed in various concerts as part of Glimmerglass’s Young Artists Program. Other roles include Seneca L’INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA with New York Lyric Opera Theatre. While studying for his master’s degree at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he sang the roles of Sparafucile RIGOLETTO, Don Quixote MAN OF LA MANCHA, Balthazar AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS, Silvano LA CALISTO, Speaker THE MAGIC FLUTE, and Canaval in the world premiere of PARADISES LOST with the University of Illinois Opera Theatre. Concert appearances include Mozart Requiem at Erie Philharmonic

A native of Beaumont, Texas, Mr. Gay received his B.M. in Vocal Performance from Lamar University, and his M.M. in Vocal Performance from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Mr. Gay was a District Winner in the 2014 and 2011 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
