Hailed by Opera News Magazine as “superb,” and “show-stealing,” and as “a triumph” by the San Francisco Chronicle, baritone Igor Vieira made his professional debut in his native Rio de Janeiro at age 17 singing the role of Dancaïre CARMEN.
Subsequent roles have included the title roles in IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, DON GIOVANNI and PÉLLEAS ET MÉLLISANDE as well as Junius THE RAPE OF LUCRETIA, Ford FALSTAFF, Lescaut MANON LESCAUT, Tonio I PAGLIACCI, Germont LA TRAVIATA, Alberich SIEGFRIED and most recently his debut at the Solis Theater in Uruguay, in the title-role LE NOZZE DI FIGARO. In June of 2010, he made his San Francisco Opera debut in the role of Happy LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST and returned in 2011 singing the role of Gubetta LUCREZIA BORGIA with Renee Fleming in the title-role.
Mr. Vieira has professionally performed 89 different operatic roles ranging from the Baroque Period to World Premiers with such companies as the San Francisco Opera, the Teatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro, Opera du Villecroze, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Center City Opera, West Bay Opera, Berkeley Opera, San Francisco Lyric Opera, Fremont Opera, Rimrock Opera, Festival Opera/Walnut Creek, Oakland Opera Theater, Teatro São Pedro and Palácio das Artes in Brazil, Opera Santa Barbara, Sacramento Opera, Opera San Luis Obispo, Abilene Opera, Fresno Grand Opera, Hidden Valley Opera, Opera in Williamsburg and the Opera Festivals of Belem and Manaus in Brazil and the Festival del Sole in Napa (USA.)
In the concert and oratorio fields, he has performed the baritone solo parts in Handel’s Messiah with the Rutherford’s Symphony in Vermont, Fauré’s Requiem with the Orchestre du Provence in Villecroze (France,) Orff’s Carmina Burana with the National Symphony in Bogotá (Colombia), the Marin Symphony in California and the Amazonas Philharmonic in Manaus (Brazil). He has also performed Mozart’s Requiem with the Silicon Valley Symphony, Mozart’s Grand Mass in C minor in a recent European tour in Hungary and Slovakia, Dvorak’s Requiem at the world famous Dvorak’s Hall in Prague, Saint-Saens’s Christmas Oratorio with the Master Works Chorale in San Mateo – California, as well as the Durufle’s Requiem with the Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra. In Brazil, Mr. Vieira sang Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Guarulhos Youth Symphony in its 10th anniversary concert, with the Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira in Rio de Janeiro and with the National Symphony in Brasilia.
In addition to his career as a singer, he also develops a successful career as a stage director, having staged operatic productions both in the US and abroad, including such titles as IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, LA BOHÈME and MADAMA BUTTERFLY.
Igor Vieira is a world finalist of the Fifth Luciano Pavarotti Voice Competition in Philadelphia, a recipient of the Margareth Tudor Award (Princeton) for two consecutive years and the Kaplan Foundation Award (Kansas City) for outstanding artistry. He was also awarded Second Place on the East Bay Opera League Voice Competition in 2006 and was a semi-finalist of the Competizione d’Opera in Dresden – Germany in 2008. Mr. Vieira holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from the Westminster Choir College in Princeton – New Jersey, and a Master’s Degree in Voice Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
