Cara Mchardy studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and at the Conservatoire de Paris. She is a Reginald Goodall Scholar and was also the recipient of a scholarship from the Wagner Society, London. Recent engagements include covering the role of Ortlinde at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in their 2018 Ring Cycles. Cara recently sang Isolde TRISTAN UND ISOLDE for Bart’s Orchestra London and Sieglinde Die Walküre for New Palace Opera at St John’s Church, Waterloo, covered the role of Senta DER FLIEGENDE HOLLAENDER for Longborough Festival Opera and sang Gutrune and covered Brunnhilde GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG for Saffron Opera Group. She has also sung the roles of Helmwige and Brünnhilde (cover) in DIE WALKURE and SIEGFRIED for Saffron Opera.
Other recent performances include Chrysothemis ELEKTRA for the Edinburgh Players Opera Group, Brünnhilde DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN for Unexpected Opera, Elisabeth TANNHAUSER and Die Kaiserin DIE FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN with the Edinburgh Players Opera Group. Cara has also recently covered the role of Eva THE MASTERSINGER OF NUREMBERG for English National Opera. Her other Wagner roles include Helmwige, Ortlinde and Gerhilde (cover) DIE WALKURE for Opera North as well as Third Norn GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG, Woglinde DAS RHEINGOLD and Helmwige (cover) DIE WALKURE for Longborough Festival Opera.
She performed the role of Brünnhilde THE MERRY NIBELUNGS by Oscar Straus as part of the Inside the Ring festival in Blockley. Cara sang Helmwige DIE WALKURE with the Rehearsal Orchestra under David Syrus and also with Fulham Opera and Saffron Opera Group and subsequently covered Isolde TRISTAN UND ISOLDE in excerpts with the Rehearsal Orchestra and sang Isolde’s Liebestod with the Melos Sinfonia.
Other roles include the title-role in Paer’s LEONORA at St John’s, Smith Square, the title-role NORMA for English Touring Opera, title-role TOSCA, Abigaille NABUCCO and title-role AIDA for Kentish Opera, the title-role (cover) TURANDOT for Dorset Opera and Lady Macbeth MACBETH for Whitehorse Opera. In contemporary music Cara covered the role of Mad Woman in the UK premiere of Weinberg’s THE PASSENGER and Austrian Woman in the premier of John Adams’ THE DEATH OF KLINGHOFFER, both for English National Opera, and sang the principal soprano role in the world premiere of ROOM OF WORLDS by Charles Webber and Eve Libertine.
Recent concerts include performances of Wesendonck Lieder with Anthony Negus in association with Longborough Festival Opera. Cara also sang in a new contemporary work, Oh America, with former members of Crass and Charles Weber at St Martins School of Art, London.
Last year Cara recorded a single for critically acclaimed pop group Squeezealongside Lewisham Hospital Choir followed by a performance with the band at the Royal Albert Hall. In January 2018 she sang on BBC Radio 2’s Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Squeeze. She is coached by Dame Anne Evans, Anthony Negus, David Syrus, Ludmilla Andrew, Liz Marcus, Sarah Pring and Jennie Caron.
