Mark Nathan is currently studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Alexander Gibson Opera School with Scott Johnson. Later this year, he will be joining Scottish Opera as an Emerging Artist. Mark graduated with distinction from a Master’s degree in singing at the Royal College of Music in 2015, where he studied with Roderick Earle, Peter Savidge and, later, Tim Evans-Jones.
Mark was recognised as an outstanding singer at the age of 13 when he was awarded a Music Scholarship to City of London Freemen’s School where he studied singing with Helen Pritchard. He then went on to complete a Music degree at Birmingham University, where he studied with Gordon Sandisson and Catherine Benson. He has also studied and taken masterclasses with notable singers such as Simon Keenlyside, Rosalind Plowright, Sir John Tomlinson, and Susan Bullock.
In May 2019, Mark will sing the role of Joseph de Rocher in the staged UK premiere of Jake Heggie’s DEAD MAN WALKING. He will then be covering the role at Welsh National Opera in June. In 2020, he will be singing Giuseppe THE GONDOLIERS and Starveling A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, both at Scottish Opera.

Mark is in demand as a recitalist and oratorio soloist. His oratorio work has included Bach’s cantata Wachet auf, Ruft uns due Stimme; Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem; Requiems by Fauré, Duruflé, and Saint-Saëns; Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light Requiem; Stanford’s Songs of the Fleet; Coleridge-Taylor’s The Death of Minnehaha; Mozart’s Coronation Mass; and Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs.
Mark is passionate about pop a capella music. He founded the University of Birmingham A Capella Network, where he sang in three groups and was the musical director for a fourth. One of his groups, The Sons of Pitches, went on to win Gareth Malone’s The Naked Choir.
He is also a keen lyricist. His debut musical, RIPTIDE: THE SLASHER MUSICAL, garnered an award from the Musical Theatre Network, after a successful Edinburgh run in 2014. Since then he has written several other musicals. He has also written a collection of children’s poems: Riddle Me This, which has been set to music by Ronald Corp for the New London Children’s Choir.
In 2011, Mark was the musical director for the University of Birmingham’s production of THE PAJAMA GAME and, in 2012, was Artistic Director of Britten’s PAUL BUNYAN to great critical acclaim. Mark plays the cello, piano, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, accordion, and the banjo. He plays in chamber ensembles, orchestras and pit bands.
