Andrew Richards has won international recognition as an exciting lirico-spinto tenor whose repertoire encompasses Bel Canto to 20th Century roles. Richards made his Wagnerian debut at Staatsoper Stuttgart in the title-role PARSIFAL, a role he has also sung at Theatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels and Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Other engagements include the title-role TRISTAN UND ISOLDE at Teatro Petruzzelli, Bari, Lancelot LE ROI ARTHUS at Opera National du Rhin, Cavaradossi TOSCA for Staatstheater Stuttgart and the Royal Danish Opera, Licinius LA VESTALE at the Theatre des Champs Elysees in Paris, his debut as Laca JENUFA at the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie and a return to Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste as Arrigo in LA BATTAGLIA DI LEGNANO.
Career highlights include the title-role WERTHER at Theatre Royal de la Monnaie, Bayerisches Staatsoper, the Wiener Staatsoper and the Teatro Maestranza in Seville, his Italian debut as Jose CARMEN at the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste, Cavaradossi TOSCA at the Bregenzer Festspiele, Pollione NORMA at the Berlin Staatsoper and (with Edita Gruberova) at the Bayerisches Staatsoper, his debut in the title role of SAMSON ET DALILA at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the title role DON CARLOS at the Danish Royal Opera, Pinkerton MADAMA BUTTERFLY at Oper Koln and Berlin Staatsoper, Jose CARMEN at the Metropolitan Opera, Opera Comique in Paris, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Arena di Verona, Macduff MACBETH at Theatre Royal de la Monnaie, Gabriele Adorno in SIMON BOCCANEGRA at L’Opera du Rhin in Strasbourg, Turiddu CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA at Hamburg Staatsoper.
A graduate of Eastman School of Music Andrew Richards has been the recipient of many prestigious awards including first prizes from the 1999 Enrico Caruso Competition, Liederkranz Vocal Competition and Opera Index as well as having received special grants from the Puccini Foundation and the Sullivan Foundation. He completed his stage training as Artist in Residence at the Pittsburgh Opera Center and began his professional career with Sarasota Opera, Pittsburgh Opera and at the Glimmerglass Opera Festival. Developing his repertoire with companies throughout North America, he had great success as Rodolfo LA BOHEME in Miami, Ottawa, Calgary and Kansas City, as Lensky EUGENE ONEGIN with Opera Colorado, as Pinkerton MADAMA BUTTERFLY with the New York City Opera, Cleveland Opera, Florida Grand Opera and as the Duke RIGOLETTO, Macduff MACBETH and Alfredo LA TRAVIATA for Opera Pacific.
