Guido Johannes Rumstadt’s successes in recent seasons include MARIA STUARDA for Opera North (UK), his company debut for Minnesota Opera with DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER and DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE; his debut with Opera Ireland with A FLORENTINE TRAGEDY and GIANNI SCHICCHI, ELEKTRA at Anger Nantes Opéra, THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, New Year Gala Concerts for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA in Tours, Telemann ORPHEUS at Wolf Trap and HÄNSEL UND GRETEL for the Nationale Reisopera in the Netherlands and the world premiere of the ballet AIR WAYS by Guy Weizmann and Roni Haver, with music by Arvo Pärt at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater.
Maestro Rumstadt is Principal Conductor of the Nürnberg Opera where he has conducted performances of LAND DES LÄCHELNS, EUGENE ONEGIN, ORFEO ED EURIDICE, FAUST, the world premiere of DAS HOLZSCHIFF, SAMSON ET DALILAH and MACBETH, IL CORSARO, GUILLAME TELL, ELEKTRA, DIE LUSTIGE WITWE, DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, OTELLO, LA TRAVIATA and the world premiere of DÜRER’S DOG with music by Penderecki, RIchter and Glass. Upcoming performances in Nürnberg include IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, LOHENGRIN, MADAMA BUTTERFLY and Wolfgang Rihm’s JAKOB LENZ. In the 2022/23 season his performances in Nürnberg include CARMEN, LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, LA CENERENTOLA and the world premiere of Anno Schreier’s TURING.
Maestro Rumstadt was born in Heidelberg and after studies in Karlsruhe, Hamburg and Salzburg, he was engaged successively in Mainz, Karlsruhe and Wiesbaden. He has appeared as guest conductor in Frankfurt, Berlin, Köln, Düsseldorf, Hannover, Coburg and Mannheim, and has a broad repertoire of operas, operettas and ballets. In 1993, he became Erster Kapellmeister in Frankfurt and every summer, he conducted at the Schlossfestspiele Zwingenberg, which he founded in 1983 and of which he remained the artistic director until 2001.
Maestro Rumstadtalso works in the orchestral field conducting the Hamburg Symphony, Philharmonic Orchestra of Essen, Frankfurt Museumsorchester, Heidelberger Philharmoniker, Orchestre de Marseille and the Orchestre National de Belgique. In the UK, he has conducted the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast and the Hallé Orchestra at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.
His operatic work is extensive with engagements including DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE at the International Mozart Week in Salzburg; OMBRA FELICE for the Salzburg Festival; DER ROSENKAVALIER, LA FAVORITA, THE RAKE’S PROGRESS and FROM THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD at Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels; ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD at the Deutsche Oper Berlin; Marschner DER VAMPYR at the Wexford Festival; MARIA STUARDA and LA FINTA SEMPLICE at the Buxton Festival; and DON GIOVANNI in Nice. In Frankfurt, he conducted IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, LOHENGRIN, BARBIER VON BAGHDAD, ELEKTRA, LADY MACBETH OF MTSENSK, DUKE BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE, LA TRAVIATA, IL MATRIMONIO SEGRETO, FIDELIO, HÄNSEL UND GRETEL and ARIADNE AUF NAXOS.
Maestro Rumstadt has made débuts with the English National Opera, conducting RIGOLETTO and LA BOHEME with Den Norske Opera and SALOME with the Nationale Reisopera, as well as a highly successful American début of MADAMA BUTTERFLY with New York City Opera. Other engagements have included PELLEAS ET MELISANDE, FROM THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD and Philippe Boesmans REIGEN in Nantes; a new production of DER FREISCHÜTZ; and the première of THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK in Frankfurt, where he also conducted revivals of DUKE BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE and FIDELIO. Other engagements included MADAMA BUTTERFLY in Cologne; new productions of ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, LA TRAVIATA, DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE and SALOME in Frankfurt; and performances of DON GIOVANNI, DER FREISCHÜTZ and Schumann GENOVEVA at Zwingenberg.
Maestro Rumstadt was General Musik Direktor of Opera Regensburg from 1998 – 2004. Productions he conducted there included LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN, ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, SALOME, LA TRAVIATA, ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, DER ROSENKAVALIER, WERTHER, OBERON, ST. MATTHEW PASSION, Braunfels DER TRAUM EIN LEBEN and Detlev GlanertJOSEPH SÜSS. Other engagements included a new production of Braunfels DIE VÖGEL at the Wiener Volksoper; a return to Nantes for DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, LA FINTA SEMPLICE and LOHENGRIN; and COQ D’OR, RIGOLETTO and ORLANDO PALADINO for Glimmerglass Opera as well as concert appearances throughout Europe.
