Fredrika Brillembourg
Ms. Brillembourg opened the 2014 Inaugural NY Philharmonic Biennial Festival to universal critical acclaim. The New York Times called her performance as the Narrator in the US Premiere of Toshio Hosokawa’s THE RAVEN with the Gotham Chamber Opera “vocally plush and dramatically courageous,” while the Financial Times described her as “tireless and astonishingly lithe while singing the impossible solos with sensuality when needed and abiding beauty.”
Ms. Brillembourg, is known for her tremendous versatility in roles ranging from Carmen to Brangäne to Ligeti’s Mescalina. As a member of the ensemble in Bremen from 1995-2001 and later as a guest, she sang all the main roles of the mezzo repertoire including: Carmen, Charlotte, Marguerite, Octavian, the Composer, Herodias, Adalgisa, Cherubino, Dorabella, and Orphee. She was the first singer in the history of the theater to win both the Kurt Hübner Prize and the Bremen Volksbühne Prize. Upon leaving the ensemble she was immediately engaged to sing at major opera houses and festivals including: the Festival in Aix- en-Provence; Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie; De Nederlandse Opera; Grand Theatre de Genève; Athens’ Megaron; Tokyo Suntory Hall; Opera Lyon; Brooklyn Academy of Music; New York City Opera; Seattle Opera; Teatro la Fenice; Teatro Massimo Bellini, Catania; Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos, Lisbon; Komische Oper Berlin; and Dresden’s Semperoper.
Recent engagements include her debut at the Frankfurt Opera as Teresa LA SONAMBULA, VERDI REQUIEM with the Oxford Philomusica at the Sheldonian Theater in Oxford and future engagements include Suzuki MADAME BUTTERFLY at the Stuttgart Opera, Maddalena in a revival of Barrie Kosky’s production of RIGOLETTO in Italian at the Komische Oper Berlin as well as a return as the Hexe in Humperdinck’s HÄNSEL UND GRETEL and the role of the Stepmother in a new children’s opera by Elena Kats-Chernin, SCHNEEWITTCHEN UND DIE 77 ZWERGE.
