Jonathan Moore is a London-based, award-winning actor, writer, and director. He has directed opera and theatre world premieres on London’s West End, at the Almeida, Donmar Warehouse, Manchester’s Royal Exchange, London’s Gate Theatre, English National Opera, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Teatro La Fenice, Münchener Biennale Opera Festival and for BBC Television. Jonathan co-wrote the libretto for Mark-Anthony Turnage’s
GREEK, which he also
directed in its world premiere and on film for the BBC.
In the opera house Jonathan has directed THE MAGIC FLUTE for Scottish Opera as well as writing a new version of the spoken text. He has directed world and British premieres by leading composers including MacMillan INEZ DE CASTRO for Scottish Opera in co-production with BBC Television, later touring to the Edinburgh Festival and Porto’s European City of Culture, Schnittke LIFE WITH AN IDIOT for Scottish Opera and English National Opera, Nyman FACING GOYA for the Satiago del Compostella Festival, Stewart Copeland CASK OF AMONTILLADO at the Holders Easter Season, Barbados and TELL TALE HEART for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden at the Linbury, Berkeley BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP at the Cheltenham International Festival and Jan Muller Wieland DIE VERSICHERUNG for Staatstheater Darmstadt. His early work was sponsored by Joe Strummer of The Clash. He has collaborated closely with Hans Werner Henze, Ludovico Einaudi, members of the punk band Killing Joke, on several projects with industrial group Test Dept, reggae star Eddy Grant, jazz pianist Uri Caine and the classical violin virtuoso Daniel Hope. In the 2016/17 season Jonathan will direct Stewart Copeland’s THE INVENTION OF MOREL for Chicago Opera Theater.
As an actor, he has played leading roles on London’s West End, at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Court, Donmar Warehouse, The Royal Exchange, Shakespeare’s Globe, and appeared on BBC TV and Radio where his co-stars have included Dame Diana Rigg, Sir Michael Caine, Gabriel Byrne, Sean Bean and Denholm Elliot.
A published playwright and librettist, his work has been performed at leading theatres in London, Manchester, Ireland and on BBC TV and Radio. Jonathan was invited by Oscar-winner Mark Rylance to direct the large scale immersive project for over fifty performers: What You Will, a co-production between Shakespeare’s Globe, The Cultural Olympiad and the Mayor’s Office of London. This was followed by several subsequent Shakespeare projects. He is the recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society Award, Best Director and Best Libretto awards at the Munich Biennale, two Edinburgh Festival Fringe First awards and an Olivier award nomination. His recent play Inigo, about Ignatius Loyola and the Jesuits had a successful Off West End run and has been published in English and Spanish. A collection of his earlier plays has also been published. He is on the Artistic Advisory Committee of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, has had a Who’s Who entry since 2007 and has been featured on the front cover of Time Out Magazine. He has been a guest speaker on the Arts at Oxford University, the London School of Economics and on numerous BBC TV and Radio arts programmes.
