Christopher Hillier

Australian baritone Christopher Hillier is a leading baritone recognised for his commanding stage presence, vocal authority, and work as a true singing-actor. Equally at home across German, Italian, French, and English repertoire, he brings a rare combination of vocal scope and dramatic immediacy to both opera and concert performance.

A graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the National Opera Studio in London, Hillier first came to prominence with Opera Australia, where he made his role debut as Zurga (The Pearl Fishers) and went on to perform a wide range of leading roles including Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Germont (La traviata), and Belcore (L’elisir d’amore). His early international work includes Malatesta (Don Pasquale) in Tokyo, alongside engagements across China, Singapore, New Zealand, and the UK.

In recent seasons, his repertoire has moved decisively into more dramatic territory, with performances including Gunther (Götterdämmerung), and major roles in Siegfried, Lucrezia Borgia and Mahagonny, and appearances with companies including Melbourne Opera, State Opera South Australia, Victorian Opera and the Australian Contemporary Opera Company. His 2025 debut as Beckmesser (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) has received local and international acclaim.

Future role debuts include Amfortas (Parsifal) and Conte di Luna (Il trovatore), alongside further development of the Wagner repertoire, including Wotan, which he will cover in Die Walküre in the UK in 2026.

In concert, Hillier has appeared with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Philharmonia, the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic and many others, with repertoire including Messiah, Verdi’s Requiem, and major symphonic works.

Hillier is the recipient of the Opera Foundation Covent Garden Scholarship and continues to build an international profile, with a growing presence in the UK and Europe.
