Soprano Emily Hindrichs, born in New Orleans, made her European concert debut as the Angel in Händel’s Jephtha with the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart under Helmuth Rilling. She later debuted as Queen of the Night THE MAGIC FLUTE at English National Opera. Engagements followed with the Seattle Opera, the Seattle Symphony, the American Composers Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, where she performed again with Helmuth Rilling.
In 2015 Hindrichs joined the ensemble of Oper Köln, where her roles have included Elettra IDOMENEO, Iania in the world premiere of Frank Pesci’s THE STRANGERS, Clemence in Saariaho’s L’AMOUR DE LOIN, Donna Clara DER ZWERG, Susanna LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Teresa BENVENUTO CELLINI, Cunegonde CANDIDE, Rose Maurrant STREET SCENE, Wanda LA GRANDE-DUCHESSE DE GÉROLSTEIN, Ottilie IM WEIßEN RÖSSL, Funfte Magd ELEKTRA and the world premiere of Arnaud Petit’s much-lauded LA BÊTE DANS LA JUNGLE.
In her first collaboration with Ensemble Musikfabrik, she gave the world premiere performance of Adela in Liza Lim’s TREE OF CODES, heard at both Oper Köln and the Hellerau Tonlagen Festival, followed by an appearance with the ensemble at the Acht Brücken Festival in Unsuk Chin’s Cantatrix Sopranica. Later that year, Hindrichs made her house debut at Komische Oper Berlin in Barrie Kosky’s acclaimed production of L’ENFANT ET LES SORTILÈGES, and at the Aalto-Theater Essen in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE. In 2018 Hindrichs made her role debut as Marie in Bernd Alois Zimmermann DIE SOLDATEN with Oper Köln. Hindrichs “left no musical wish unfulfilled, rose to every challenge, never weakened” (Die Deutsche Bühne) and was immediately engaged by the WDR Sinfonieorchester for their performance of the Zimmermann Soldaten Vokalsinfonie, under the direction of Emilio Pomàrico, and later nominated for “Sänger/Sängerin des Jahres” in the Opernwelt Critic’s Survey.
At the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Hindrichs’ roles include Oscar UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, Sophie DER ROSENKAVALIER, Musetta LA BOHÈME, and her breakout performance at the 2014 International Händel Festspiele as Costanza RICCARDO PRIMO for which she was hailed as “the discovery of the evening” (Opernnetz).
Other notable operatic engagements include Anne Truelove THE RAKE’S PROGRESS with Opéra Théâtre Saint-Étienne, Königin der Nacht DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE with Oper Frankfurt, Aalto-Theater Essen, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and Chicago Opera Theatre, Konstanze DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL with the Connecticut Early Music Festival, the title-role in Stravinsky LE ROSSIGNOL alongside L’ENFANT ET LES SORTILÈGES at Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Olympia LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN at Komische Oper Berlin, Ishmaela in Olga Neuwirth THE OUTCAST at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Marguerite FAUST at Oper Köln and Royal Danish Opera Copenhage, the role of Elsa in Peter Konwitschny’s production of Paul Dessau’s LANZELOT at the Deutsches Nationaltheater, Weimar and the role of Marie in a new touring production of DIE SOLDATEN under François-Xavier Roth and Calixto Bieito at the Kölner Philharmonie, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and the Philharmonie de Paris. Upcoming engagements include Soprano A in the world premiere of Philippe Manoury’s DIE LETZTEN TAGE DER MENSCHHEIT, Donna Anna DON GIOVANNI for Oper Köln.
On the concert platform Hindrichs has sung the Glière’s Concerto for Coloratura Soprano at London’s Barbican, the the world premiere of Liza Lim’s Annunciation Triptych with the WDR Sinfonieorchester under the direction of Cristian Mãcelaru and appeared with the Concertgebouworkest under the musical direction of François-Xavier Roth. She has appeared in recital with pianist Joseph Middleton during the Britten Weekend in Aldeburgh (England), featuring world premieres of song cycles by Christian Mason and Edmund Nesbit, while also appearing in performances of Hindrichs’ reconstructed edition of LES MAMELLES DE TIRÉSIAS as arranged by Benjamin Britten.
Hindrichs was a recipient of a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, a Sullivan Foundation Award, the winner of the Les Azuriales Opera Competition in France, and a New England regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions. She holds degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi, the University of Exeter, and a doctorate from the New England Conservatory. She completed her musical formation as a Max Kade Scholar at the Middlebury College German for Singers program, as a member of the Seattle Opera Young Artists Program, and as Tanglewood Music Center Vocal Fellow.
