Freddie Tong

Hong-Kong born British bass-baritone Freddie Tong has built a reputation as a leading singing-actor of repertoire ranging from traditional buffo characters to the most dramatic of bass-baritone roles.  His concert and operatic repertoire spans from early Classical works to world-premieres.  Recent engagements include the role of the Councilman in Missy Mazzoli’s BREAKING THE WAVES at the Edinburgh International Festival with Scottish Opera, and on tour to the Adelaide Festival, Australia, his role-debut as Hunding DIE WALKUERE at Longborough Festival Opera, Zuniga CARMEN at English National Opera, Alberich SIEGFRIED & GOTTERDAMMERUNG  at London’s Hackney Empire and Colline LA BOHEME and Dr. Grenvil LA TRAVIATA for Opera Hong Kong.  Upcoming engagements include Baron Douphol LA TRAVIATA at English National Opera, Alberich GOTTERDAMMERUNG and Caronte L’ORFEO at the Longborough Festival Opera.

On the concert stage his repertoire includes the Bach Johannes-Passion, Mendelssohn Elias, Haydn Theresa Mass, Paukenmesse, Creation and Nelson Mass, Mozart, Faure and Verdi Requiems, Bruckner Mass in F Minor, Puccini Messa di Gloria and Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle. Freddie studied Music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, later undertaking post-graduate studies at their prestigious Opera School.  He has been a GSMD Gilbert & Sullivan Prize Finalist and also been awarded a Kathleen Ferrier Bursary Award for Young Singers.
