Brazilian bass José Gallisa made his debut at the São Paolo Theatre as Talpa IL TABARRO and Simone GIANNI SCHICCHI, going on to sing Ramfis and Il Re AIDA. Other roles with the company included Nourabad LES PECHEURS DE PERLES, Il Commendatore DON GIOVANNI, Reinmar von Zweter TANNHÄUSER, Samuele UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, Lodovico and Montano OTELLO, Pistol FALSTAFF and Il Dottore LA TRAVIATA. He also sang four operas by the Brazilian composer Carlos Gomes and was awarded the Gomes Singing Prize. In 2005 Mr Gallisa won the Brazilian ‘Carlos Gomez Prize’ awarded to the best male singer from the previous season for his work in LOHENGRIN, THE RING and PEARL FISHERS. He recorded Handel Messiah with the André Youth Orchestra and sang the first world performance of THE CAFÉ OPERA by the German composer Hans Joachim Köellreutter. He has sung with many eminent European conductors including Isaac Karabstchevsky, Roberto Minczuk, Siegfried Köhler and Eugene Kohn and directors such as Hugo de Ana, John Copley and Aidan Lang. He returned to London to appear at the 22nd London Handel Festival in LOTARIO and sang Don Bartolo LE NOZZE DI FIGARO at the Royal Academy of Music conducted by Sir Colin Davis. Upcoming engagements include Geronte de Ravoir MANON LESCAUT and Sarastro DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE with Theatre Osnabrueck.

Further roles he has performed include Gajolo FOSCA by Gomes and Il Commendatore DON GIOVANNI at São Paulo Opera House. He appeared at the Dubai Opera Festival as Balthazar in Gian Carlo Menotti AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS and toured America with London City Opera as Zuniga CARMEN. He sang Sparafucile RIGOLETTO, Almazor CONDOR and Don Antonio IL GUARANY both by Carlos Gomes at the Amazonas Opera Festival in Manaus and the role of Comte des Grieux MANON for São Paulo Opera House. He also sang Sarastro DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE at Rio de Janeiro and Nourabad LES PECHEURS DE PERLES for San Diego Opera. Other credits include Fafner in both DAS RHEINGOLD and SIEGFRIED for the Amazonas Opera Festival; Heerrufer LOHENGRIN at São Paulo Opera House; The Old Hebrew SAMSON ET DALILA and Il Re AIDA for San Diego Opera and the role of Bathazar LA FAVORITA at Stadttheater Giessen. He returned to Rio de Janeiro for Nourabad LES PECHEURS DE PERLES, more performances of CONDOR at São Paulo and sang Commendatore DON GIOVANNI in Campinas the home town of Carlos Gomes as a tribute to the composer. As well as his operatic commitments, Jose Gallisa regularly appears on the concert platform in works including Mozart Requiem and Coronation Mass; Handel Messiah; Beethoven Symphony No. 9, Missa Solemnis and Mass In C, Berlioz L’enfance du Christ and Dvorak Te Deum.

Jose Gallisa became a company member at Theater Bremen in 2008, and was a member of the ensemble for two years. His roles there included Zaccaria NABUCCO, Ramfis AIDA, Timur TURANDOT, Alidoro LA CENERENTOLA, Il Commendatore DON GIOVANNI and Don Basilio IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA. In 2013 he became a member of the ensemble at Staatstheater Mainz, where roles have included Tom UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, Collatinus THE RAPE OF LUCRETIA and Don Alfonso COSI FAN TUTTE. From 2014/15, Gallisa has been part of the ensemble at Theater Osnabrueck.

He studied singing at the Universida de Federal de Minas Gerais and later at the Faculdade de Música Carlos Gomes. As a recipient of a bursary from the Brazilian Government in the Bolsa Virtuose de Cultura programme, he went to England to join the Postgraduate Opera Course at the Royal Academy of Music. After winning a singing competition sponsored by the Brazilian Ministry of Education.
