Ylva Kihlberg

The Soprano Ylva Kihlberg is born and educated in Stockholm, Sweden, where she from 1997-98 was engaged at the Royal Opera.Since the year 2000 she has been a company principal at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen, Denmark where she had her debut as Mimì LA BOHÈME. “She touches something deep, because she is so un-artificial, so straight forward and apparently sincere”, one of the critics said at this occasion.
Recent engagements include Mimì LA BOHEME, the title-role in MADAMA BUTTERFLY, Lady billows ALBERT HERRING at The Royal Danish Opera, DANCER IN THE DARK at The Lincoln Center, New York, Rosalinde DIE FLEDERMAUS and her UK debut as Emilia Marty THE MAKROPOULIS CASE by Janácěk’s with Opera North, which also opened the 2012 Edinburgh festival.In 2013/14 she will sing RUSALKA conducted by Tomas Hanus and Donna Elvira DON GIOVANNI at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen.
Here she has also previously sung parts such as: Donna Elvira DON GIOVANNI, The Countess LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Michaela CARMEN, Fiordiligi COSI FAN TUTTE, Vitellia LA CLEMENZA DI TITO, Poppea L’INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA, Lisa PIQOVAYA DAMA, as well as Wellgunde, Gerhilde and Gutrune in Wagners’ RING, Jeanne THE DEVILS OF LOUDUN by Penderecki.
Outside the Royal Opera, Copenhagen she has been singing parts such as: Ingeborg in Heise’s DROT OG MARSKAND, Alice FALSTAFF at the Danish National Opera, Donna Elvira at the opera houses in Stockholm and Malmö, and Rheintochter and Walküre in Göteborg conducted by Kent Nagano. She made her US-debut in 2006/07 in the title-role of Schumann’s Genoveva, with great success.
In the season 2008/09, 09/10 and 10/11 Ylva Kihlberg has sung her first Marie WOZZECK and Tatjana EUGENE ONEGIN. Furthermore Poul Ruders has written an opera, based on Lars von Trier’s DANCER IN THE DARK for her, which opened the season 2010-11. In 2010 Ylva Kilhlberg also sang in Montepulciano as Lady Billows ALBERT HERRING, directed by Keith Warner.
Besides singing opera Mrs. Kihlberg is a frequent recitalist and soloist on the concert stage, covering a repertoire from Handel’s Messiah to Berg’s Sieben Frühe Lieder. Performances include concert-arias by Mozart with the Danish Radio Sinfonietta conducted by Adam Fischer, The Bells by Rachmaninov and the soprano part in Dvorak’s Requiem. Ylva Kihlberg has participated on the CD releases “The Little Match Girl” by August Enna and “Lygtemændene tager til byen” by Per Nørgård. In 2011 she was awarded the cross of the order of chivalry by Queen Margrethe II.
